Time is not always on our side, especially when it comes to maintaining a youthful looking face. Facial wrinkles are often one of the first signs of aging. If you aren't ready for cosmetic surgery but would like to perk up your look, having Dysport™  or  BOTOX® Cosmetic could be just right for you. 

With the popularity of BOTOX® Cosmetic there was bound to be some competition. Dysport™ (formerly known as Reloxin) is an alternative to the highly-requested wrinkle treatment that has received international attention. This product is made by the same company as Restylane® and is now available for our Atlanta patients.

BOTOX® Cosmetic, a trade name for the group of naturally occurring proteins, has become a well-recognized brand amongst patients and even people who have never considered wrinkle improvement treatments. Now, Dysport™ is positioned to become an effective competitor for the non-invasive treatment of facial lines and angry expressions.  

There may be advantages of one product over the other.   In some patients there may be a slightly earlier onset of action (most patients notice improvement in 2 days) and, more importantly, in some patients, the duration of wrinkle and frown reduction can be longer.

We believe that these advantages are highly individualized and eventually we will discover who is a better candidate for either BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport™.  Not all patients will experience this greater treatment longevity and some patients who receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments can have long durations of effect. Many patients will prefer to stay with the reliability and brand of BOTOX® Cosmetic, which has proven to be a tremendous product over time. We are pleased to offer both great products in our office and with the largest experience in this country using Dysport™ we feel confident that patients will be pleased with their results.

For patients that have been treated for wrinkles with BOTOX® Cosmetic, the treatment with Dysport™ will be a similar. In our experience with Dysport™  most patients treated with the product have reported that the treatment was identical to their treatment experience with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

How Does Dysport Work?

Dysport™ is a modern wrinkle treatment, similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic, made from purified clostridium botulinum. It effectively treats "dynamic wrinkles" which are caused by facial muscle movement. Dysport™ temporarily relaxes the targeted facial muscles preventing them from contracting and causing lines and wrinkles.

Soon after treatment the muscle movement ceases and the wrinkles begin to smooth out. Improvements from Dysport™ are not permanent, so you will need to return for additional injections every few months to keep them up. What Are the Differences Between Dysport and BOTOX® Cosmetic?

While Dysport™ and BOTOX Cosmetic injectable wrinkle treatments are similar in many ways, there are some notable differences between the products as well. They both contain the same active ingredient, purified clostridium botulinum (botulinum toxin type A); however, Dysport™ is suspended in lactose and BOTOX is suspended in sodium chloride. Additionally, Dysport differs in the following ways:

In U.S. clinical trials, Dysport was shown to take effect within 1 to 2 days instead 3 to 5 days for BOTOX Cosmetic; it also may last longer, especially in younger patients.

The wrinkle-relaxing effects of Dysport™ have been found to spread farther from the injection site than with BOTOX Cosmetic, which can reduce the number of required injections but also the precision.
